Do you Live in One of the Worst Cities for Bed Bugs?
If you do, you may want to know what you can do to prevent an infestation and what you need to do if it is too late. According to a pest control assessment they found that the worst city for bed bugs is Chicago, IL and it has taken the top spot for the last 2 years. The top 5 include Los Angeles, CA. Columbus, OH. Detroit, MI and Cincinnati, OH but six cities on the east coast were on this ‘Worst 50 Cities for Bed Bugs’ list. Baltimore, MD was ranked 27th. To understand why these cities may rank so high year after year you may need to know a little about the bug first.

Bed bugs are a parasitic insect that feeds strictly on blood. They tend to prefer human blood which makes them a terror for many people. These critters are mostly active at night and because they prefer a nice warm spot they are found in beds of sleeping families. They are on the hunt for blood so when the host is warm and sleeping in bed the little bugs go to work. They are fairly dormant during the day time hours and because of their small size they can go undetected. Most people only realize they have bed bugs when lots of small red bites start to appear in the morning. They can reproduce very quickly and a female can lay lots of eggs when she finds a nice suitable warm space. This can be bad if that place is your bed. Bed Bugs find housing in many types of cities and climates because they can survive in many types of weather. They tend to spread faster in cities that have people living in closer proximity than other urban cities.

Bed Bugs can make their way to your house in lots of different ways. They can hitch a ride on your clothes, luggage and even your pets. Making sure that you keep track of your belongings and checking your pet after being in a public place can help keep bed bugs from getting into your home. It may also help to go through all your clothing and luggage to look for the small brown bugs.
Once you have noticed the small bites of these often unseen little critters, you want to act very quickly. One way to start it to make life less than ideal for them. You can vacuum your mattress and put a vinyl zip up cover to suffocate them (APM offers a great mattress encasement by Clean Brands; just call your nearest APM Branch location for details). This will also make it so they cannot reach you during the night and feed. If you notice that these things are not helping then you may need to call a professional exterminator like Advanced Pest Management.
